2024 Tokyo Marathon Results; Kipruto takes the lead

In a stunning turn of events at the Tokyo Marathon 2024, Kenyan's Benson Kipruto outshone two-time Olympic champion Eliud Kipchoge, clinching victory in a record-breaking time of 2:02:16.

Kipchoge, the former record-holder at 2:02:40, struggled and finished 10th in 2:06:50, marking one of his slowest marathon times.

Kipruto led a Kenyan sweep with Timothy Kiplagat securing second place (2:02:55) and Vincent Kipkemoi Ngetich in third (2:04:18). The race took place amidst the somber backdrop of the recent tragic death of world record holder Kelvin Kiptum.

The women's race also witnessed a course record, as Ethiopia's Sutume Asefa Kebede claimed victory in 2:15:55. Notably, double Olympic track champion Siffan Hassan finished fourth (2:18:55) in only her third marathon.

The unexpected drama unfolded early in the men's event when Kipchoge dropped from the leading pack before the 20km mark. Despite a world record pace at the start, Kipchoge struggled, falling behind significantly by the halfway point.

Kenyan runners Kipruto, Kiplagat, and Ngetich seized the opportunity, turning it into a three-man race. Kipruto made a decisive move at 38km, securing his third World Major Marathon victory, following successes in Boston (2021) and Chicago (2022).

Reflecting on the race, Kipruto expressed happiness for the course record, while Kipchoge, in a rare setback, simply stated, "Not every day is Christmas Day." Kipchoge did not elaborate on the issues during the race or discuss prospects for Paris 2024.
